Dan and Rae Landis Outstanding Dissertation Award

Description

The purpose of International Academy for Intercultural Research is to promote and facilitate intercultural research in the areas of psychology, communications, education, management, and other areas of specialization in the social sciences. The Academy encourages high quality intercultural research at the doctoral level, which is usually the starting point for independent research. The Dan and Rae Outstanding Dissertation Award is intended to recognize and honor outstanding research by aspiring intercultural researchers. Support for the award is provided by the Academy and Elsevier Sciences, Ltd.

 

Prize

US $1000.00, one year membership in IAIR and free registration at the IAIR Biennial Conference when the prize is conferred. The winner will be asked to give a presentation of his or her research at the Conference. 

Criteria for Submission and Deadlines

Your doctoral thesis (dissertation) must be relevant to the field of intercultural studies. It should be unique yet rigorous in its theory and method. Doctoral theses eligible for an award must have been completed (and accepted by the awarding university) during the two calendar years ending on December 31 of the year prior to the Conference year.

Submissions must be received by the IAIR President (see the home page of the Academy for the address of the current President) by January 31 of the Conference year.

Application Procedure

Please submit a 1500-word abstract of the doctoral thesis in English. The abstract must contain no information that identifies the applicant, thesis supervisor, or institution. The abstract must contain complete details of the theory, method, results, and implications for the field. The abstract must be submitted double spaced on paper and on a 3.5-inch computer disk using a common word processing file format such as Word, Wordperfect, Rich Text Format, or HTML. In a separate file, list your contact information (title of submission, name, physical address, phone number, fax number, email address, webpage if you have one). 

A letter from the thesis advisor certifying the university acceptance date of the thesis must be included.

The application letter cover letter must include complete applicant contact information, including an address or addresses through which the candidate can be contacted during the evaluation period. The information should also include telephone numbers, fax numbers, and e-mail addresses, if available. Submission should be made to the administration office of the Academy.

Following a preliminary evaluation, finalists will be asked to submit a 35 page version of the doctoral thesis, in the language in which it was written to the evaluation committee. Should the original language be other than English, the selection committee will be augmented to include scholars who are native speakers of that language and who feel competent to evaluate the work. The version should be suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal such as the International Journal of Intercultural Relations.
